The Derby is Coming, the Derby is Coming!
And so are the British. Well, the Queen of England, anyway, will attend the Kentucky Derby, this year. Perhaps she is aware that big hats and horses aside, the Granddaddy of Horseraces is known for one thing… sipping Mint Juleps in on a warm Spring afternoon! I will be at the Derby showing off one of my latest Signature Cocktails. Give it a try at home!
Bodog JetSet Julep
(Created by The Liquid Muse for bodog.com)
3 ounces bourbon
1 ounce Gran Gala orange liqueur (made with VSOP brandy)
1 ounce *mint-infused raw sugar simple syrup
Ice cubes
Crushed ice
Heaping bunch of fresh mint
Shake bourbon, orange liqueur and simple syrup vigorously, with ice cubes. Strain into Collins glass filled with crushed ice. Garnish with a handful of fresh mint and a short straw.
*Mint-Infused Raw Sugar Simple Syrup
1 cup raw sugar
1 cup water
large handful of fresh mint
Boil water, sugar and mint until the mixture reaches a rolling boil. Then, simmer for a few minutes. Remove from heat, let cool and strain into a small glass pitcher or jar. Refrigerate.

Here is another Julep alternative. I have not yet tried this whiskey but the vanilla-infusion sounds delish.
Phillips Union Vanilla Mint Julep
2 1⁄2 parts Phillips Union Vanilla Whiskey
4 fresh mint sprigs
1 tsp. powdered sugar
2 tsp. water
Muddle mint leaves, powdered sugar, and water in a Collins glass. Fill the glass with shaved or crushed ice and add Phillips Union Vanilla. Top with more ice and garnish with a mint sprig.

Morry's of Naples. In the evenings the 'Back Room' is dimmed and lit by countless candles. A hip crowd with a very cool vibe. One of my fav's!
yes! lets meet up Deb. Would love to sample cocktails with you. You have to turn me on to the great restaurants you've been discovering...
I'm dying to hear some Derby scoop! The Queen. Kevin Federline. Did they cross paths? Inquiring minds wish to know.
(Oh right, it was quite a good horserace, too...)
